Before Job Interview – Company Search

Most job seekers put a lot of effort in preparing for job interviews, including writing a three-minute self-introduction, preparing answers to potential questions employers may ask, putting together your personal portfolio.  All these are certainly important, but another task is equally important before you do all these – company search.

Reading the job ad in details can let you find out something not only about the job, but also the company.  For example, if the salesperson is expected to handle international sales, it may imply that the company is having businesses with places all over the world.  If the job ad is hiring someone to fill a new position, it may suggest that the company is expanding business and is forming a new team.

Nowadays, it is very convenient to get information on the Internet though you need to have the wisdom to distinguish whether the information is true or not.  Most companies have their official website now, and most of the information can be found such as corporate mission, organization and structure, branches, products and services, and contact information.  Take a look at the website and see if you like their products or if you share their mission.

If the company is a reputable or an international corporation, you may find news reports or magazine features about them.  Read how other people or the media comment on the company.  In this way, you know the ranking of the company in the community and in the world.

The job you are applying for may be recommended by your recruitment consultant.  If so, you can get more information from your consultant as he / she knows more about the company.  They are willing to share with you the company culture, style and pace of work, organization structure, foreseeable developments, and financial status.  You may also find out from the consultant the company’s expectations on the candidate for that particular job post, and so you can consider if you are suitable for the job as well as for the company.
